Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a comfortable position as White House strategist communications advisor. It is not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to serve as the White House's strategy communications adviser. She is faced with numerous challenges, for instance being a president who serves as his communication director. However, throughout it all Schlapp is focused on the mission that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's political affairs and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as as the broader communications operation for policy-related rollouts. So far, her primary focus has been on topics such as security in schools and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade, and other related topics. As of now she doesn't deal extensively with journalists. It was in March that she gained a sudden burst interest, after it was widely known that Schlapp was a potential candidate to fill Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. It was a tense battle. Schlapp allied with Tony Sayegh, who was an aspirant. The two began fighting in the media. Schlapp said to that the Washington Examiner that she spoke to Sayegh to discuss an article that had been published in the past on him.
